Hey Benji,

Thanks for sharing and giving us a behind the scenes look into your process (and feelings).

It was great to read that you tried a few approaches before your content started to rank, and that moving to a subfolder did the trick.

Hoping for higher rankings and more traffic.

It truly can take MUCH more time than most think to make SEO truly grow and begin scaling. But, once you hit that next step, that oomph, you're off to the races. Lol thanks for sharing your opinion. I'll be the first to admit I'm not an expert at everything when it comes to SEO (especially on the technical side). What matters more than knowing everything is finding the right solution to the problem- Which we did and got the outcome we wanted.

I'll be blunt, I'm amazed you didn't know about the subdomain issue.

It's been a widely known issue for over a decade + now that subdomains are treated differently than the parent domain with Google and SEO.

If your company prides itself on growing business/traffic through content, I would be a little bit embarrassed to blog about how you didn't notice this or think it wasn't a big issue out of the gate, that you had to find out later it was...

Yeah, that was an eye opener for us too. None of us come from a technical SEO background so we were surprised by how much it matters too.

Yes, that last part is really important and the key to our whole strategy -- topic selction.

In reply to <a href="https://www.growandconvert.com/content-marketing/scaling-seo-traffic/#comment-19554">Alberto Cabas Vidani</a>.

Hey Alberto,

1.We talk about some of this stuff on our Q&A calls in our course (difficult client convos). I think the biggest way to overcome weak results is great expectation setting from the beginning of working with someone. On our sales calls, we share our process, why it's different than other agencies, and we let them know that they should expect to see conversions scale somewhere between 6 months and a year. That gets them focused more on a longer term timeframe rather than scrutinizing the first few months of an engagement. Then each month, we're honest in what we see - if it's taking longer than we would've hoped, we just say that and explain why we think that's the case and things we can try to do to resolve the issue.

2. I'm not sure I understand the question here. But I'll try to answer it anyways - let me know if this is not what you meant. We use our process pain point SEO. The ideas for keywords and topics all come from the user research we do at the beginning of every engagement with a client. That user research informs long-tail topics that we can go after that should drive conversions. We just target one keyword, and oftentimes, we'll rank for other things as well that were not necessarily intended. Also, if you look at a SERP, using the related searches at the bottom and the people also ask section to inform what to write about will also help you rank for other long-tail searches.
